Post Op Care for Breast Surgery

Following your surgery, you will be sent to the recovery room. Your time in recovery will vary depending on how you recover from the anesthesia.

When you wake up in the recovery room, you will be wearing a surgical bra with a drain attached. Before leaving the hospital, the nurses will instruct you on how to care for your drain throughout the night. You will need to wear the bra until returning to the doctor's office the next day.

***When you get home from surgery, please call the office to set an appointment the following day for your drain removal.***

Once the drain is removed in the office, you will need to wear your surgical bra for another 3 days and nights to keep pressure on the area. After the drain is removed, you may have some drainage from the area. DO NOT be alarmed--this is normal.

There are small tapes called steri-strips. DO NOT remove them! If you try to remove the strips, you will risk opening the incision area and tearing your skin. The steri-strips will curl up on the edges and fall off on their own. Remember--DO NOT remove the strips.

You can bathe as normal. Just keep the area clean with soap and water. After the drain is removed, you will then need to return to the office in 3 weeks for another check-up.

If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact our office. REMEMBER Call the office when you get home from the hospital so that you can schedule an appointment for your drain removal on the next day.

NOTE If your surgery is on Friday, the drain will not be removed until Monday.
